What do you wear with a wool midi skirt in winter?
Tuck a fine-gauge knit into the waistband, wear opaque tights within one shade of your boots, and pick a coat that either stops above the skirt's waistband or falls past its hem. Never let a coat end inside the skirt. Boots that cover the ankle close the line and keep the eye travelling downward instead of stopping at a bare shin.

Outfit 1 · The tucked knit, and why the gauge matters more than the colour

Tuck in a fine ribbed knit. Fine is not a stylistic preference, it is structural. A chunky knit tucked into a high rise adds four or five centimetres of bulk at the narrowest point of the torso, and the entire proportion argument for a high waist collapses. If your only jumper is chunky, wear it untucked and skip to outfit two.

The high rise is doing a specific job. It moves the visual waistline up to the narrowest part of the ribcage and lets the A-line fall from there, which lengthens the leg by borrowing from the torso. This is why a high-waisted midi flatters a far wider range of bodies than a straight skirt at the same length.
Outfit 2 · The long cardigan, and where it has to end
The mistake here is a cardigan that stops mid-skirt. Two horizontal breaks within twenty centimetres of each other cut the body into segments, and no fabric quality rescues that.

Outfit 3 · How long should your coat be over a midi skirt?
This ruins more winter outfits than any other decision, so it gets its own section and a table.
There are two coat lengths that work over a midi. There is one that never does, and it happens to be the length most coats are cut to.

Outfit 4 · Plaid, and the discipline it requires
Plaid is a pattern with a scale, and scale is what most people get wrong. A large check needs uninterrupted space to read as intended, which means everything else in the outfit has to go quiet.

A composition note, since we would rather you hear it from us. Our plaid is a 70% wool blend with 30% polyester; the plain colourways are a lighter cool wool blend at roughly half wool. The plaid therefore holds a pressed crease longer and creases less across the lap, which matters if you sit at a desk. The plain colours are softer against the skin and drape closer to the body. Neither is better. They are different fabrics chosen for different reasons.

The gap between hem and boot
Between the hem of a midi and the top of your boot there is a stretch of leg, and how you treat it is the difference between an outfit and a near miss.
Three approaches that hold up:
- Tonal legs. Opaque tights within one shade of the boot. The leg reads as a single column and the gap stops registering as a gap.
- Boot height above the ankle. A shaft that clears the ankle bone closes the break physically. Knee-high boots under an 80 cm midi remove the question entirely.
- Hem at the narrowest point of the calf. On most women that is just below the knee, not mid-calf. It is the reason our 80 cm suits more people than a 90 cm would.
The one combination to avoid: a midi with low-cut ankle boots and sheer or bare legs in cold weather. The horizontal cut at the narrowest part of the ankle shortens the whole leg, and no amount of quality in the skirt compensates.
Which length should you actually buy?
The honest answer depends on your height, and nobody tells you this at the point of sale.

Caring for wool so it outlasts the season
Most wool skirts on the market are dry clean only, and that single line on a care label determines how often a garment actually gets worn. Ours are not.
Machine wash at 30°C on the wool programme. No tumble drying, no bleach. Reshape while damp and dry flat, away from a radiator, because direct heat is what makes wool go hard and glassy. Hang by the waistband rather than folded over a bar, so the flare keeps its memory.
Between wears, air the skirt overnight instead of washing it. Wool sheds odour on its own, which is precisely why a wool skirt can go five or six wears before it needs anything at all. Washing it more often than that shortens its life without making it cleaner.

Is a wool skirt warm enough for winter?
A cool wool skirt with opaque tights is warmer than most trousers cut in a thin fabric, because wool traps air and keeps insulating even when damp. For the coldest weeks, layer fleece-lined tights underneath rather than buying a heavier skirt. A heavier cloth at this length adds weight without adding warmth where you need it.
